Story Time: My Experience with the Gelato Cake Strain
Personally, I’m a huge fan of the Gelato Cake strain. I first tried the Gelato Cake weed strain late last year, and I honestly regret not having tried it earlier.
I found the Gelato Cake strain in my search for an indica-dominant strain that would help me sleep a little better. It’s known for a mellow cerebral high, so it was a pretty good option for what I was looking for at that time.
The first thing I felt was my head being a little bit floaty, and I felt noticeably happier. However, that soon gave way to the indica side of things, and I felt relaxed. A few minutes later, I was sleepy.
From my own experiences, I’d say that it’s a relatively mellow strain. Although it produces a strong body high, it doesn’t produce a super potent head high, which, in my opinion, makes it ideal for most people who want it as a sleep aid or to unwind after a long day at work. It was very similar to an alien gorilla strain my local dispo used to carry.Â
I’ve now smoked this strain a couple dozen times, and I haven’t found it to make me anxious or paranoid in the least. It’s definitely one of the top three strains I’ve tried to help me relax.
What Is the Gelato Cake Strain?
The Gelato Cake strain is an indica-dominant hybrid made by crossing two other very popular cannabis varieties, both of which are also extremely sweet and delectable.
I’ve always had a sweet tooth, and I like both parent strains almost as much as Gelato Cake itself.Â
With sweet, creamy, and fruity flavors, an abundance of THC, and some potentially beneficial terpenes, it’s definitely a strain worth considering.
Gelato Cake Strain Appearance
Although the appearance of a strain is never my first consideration, the Gelato Cake weed strain does look pretty cool. It has relatively small and dense buds about the size of grapes at their largest.
In terms of color, they are quite dark, what most people would call olive green, with a few lighter accents. There are also plenty of very thin orange pistils and a relatively thick coating of white trichomes packed to the brim with THC.
Gelato Cake Strain Genetics
Gelato Cake strain is roughly 75% indica and 25% sativa. It has two extremely popular parent strains, Gelato #33 and Wedding Cake.
Gelato #33 is a somewhat balanced hybrid strain with roughly 20% THC. Gelato #33 is a cross between Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies and Sunset Sherbert. This is more of an uplifting strain, although a certain body high is involved. As you can tell by its name, it has a relatively creamy and sweet flavor.
We then have Wedding Cake, a heavily indica-dominant hybrid that is made by crossing Animal Mints with Triangle Kush. This is a potent strain with THC levels upwards of 24%, making it ideal for the more seasoned cannabis users. It’s the kind of strain that puts you to sleep, and it has amazing flavors reminiscent of sweet vanilla wedding cake combined with just a bit of spice.
Gelato Cake Strain THC/CBD Content
Although the CBD content of this strain is negligible, it contains around 1% CBG, with this cannabinoid showing potential to help treat issues related to trouble sleeping and symptoms related to anxiety. It may also act as a pain reliever.
However, I assume what you’re interested in with Gelato Cake weed strain is its THC content. At the very least, you can expect it to have around 20% THC, and 25% at the higher end of the spectrum.
While I wouldn’t say this is super high, it definitely is on the higher end of the spectrum. If the strain you buy is potent and around 25%, I’d suggest some caution to anyone who is inexperienced with cannabis or has a low THC tolerance.
Now, in spite of its relatively high THC level, the high that this strain produces is quite mellow and relaxing, so I’d say that it’s still ideal for beginners, as long as you start slow. A few puffs should be more than enough to get you where you’re going.
Gelato Cake Strain Terpenes
There are three dominant terpenes in the Gelato Cake strain: limonene, caryophyllene, and linalool. These three terpenes add both their flavors and potential effects to the mix.
Remember, terpenes may interact with cannabinoids through what is known as the entourage effect, to produce potentially beneficial effects.
For instance, besides limonene adding its distinct citrusy flavor to the equation, it is also shown to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and potentially pain-relieving effects. Limonene has also been shown to be effective at improving sleep quality.
We then have caryophyllene, a terpene that is well known for having potential anxiety-relieving effects, as well as pain-relieving benefits. Finally, linalool is a terpene that is citrusy, sweet, and spicy, and it is a great terpene for aiding relaxation and sleep.
Gelato Cake Strain Effects
As I mentioned above, this strain is about 25% sativa. Personally, I always find that the sativa effects, that cerebral punch, hit before the indica genetics take over. Just a few puffs of the Gelato Cake weed strain produced a mild sense of euphoria.
It’s not a super strong sense of euphoria or happiness like with some sativa or sativa-dominant strains, but it did produce an enjoyable sensation. I felt just a little bit mellower, happier, and in a better state of mind in general. For the first 30 or 45 minutes, I also felt a bit talkative and creative. However, that soon led to the indica-dominant genetics of the Gelato Cake strain.
I slowly felt a relatively strong wave of relaxation wash over my whole body, and it all started with my fingers tingling ever so slightly, followed by a feeling of my whole body getting very heavy. It just felt like I was existing without a single worry.
Eventually, I started feeling pretty sedated and sleepy about two or three hours after initially consuming the strain. Thanks to both the THC content as well as those terpenes listed above, I find that one of the best effects of this strain is helping me to relax, both bodily and mentally, as well as its ability to help put me to sleep.
Thanks to a combination of limonene and THC, I was also able to take advantage of the pain-relieving benefits that this strain has to offer. I often have painful joints due to weightlifting, but the Gelato Cake weed strain tends to take away a lot of that discomfort.
Gelato Cake Strain Reported Flavors
Thanks to those terpenes and its overall genetics, the Gelato Cake strain has a fantastic sweet and slightly sour flavor, with the dominant flavor being creamy vanilla.Â
However, it’s not quite as cakey on the exhale, as there’s a pretty strong peppery undertone combined with hints of pine needles and diesel. It’s definitely packed with a pretty sweet fragrance!
Gelato Cake Strain Growing Info
The Gelato Cake strain is said to be relatively easy to grow. It tends to be fairly resilient to differing climates and changing conditions, as well as to pests and diseases. It should do fine as long as it receives ideal nutrient, light, and water levels.
It is a very resinous strain, so the one challenge you might face with it is mildew or bud rot, but this can easily be solved with a good ventilation system.
Although there isn’t much information about growing times and yields, it shouldn’t take more than nine weeks for it to flower, and if the plant is well taken care of, you should get up to 1.6 oz per square foot of plant.
Who I Would Recommend the Gelato Cake Strain To
I recommend the Gelato Cake strain for anybody who enjoys a relatively strong body high combined with a mellow and slight cerebral high. The sativa genetics are strong enough to produce a mild sense of euphoria and happiness but not so strong that you end up in outer space.
It’s an ideal strain for those who like the relatively relaxing and sedating effects of indicas, and it’s, therefore, a good strain to try in the late afternoon or evening. It’s also a good choice for those who want to attempt to relieve symptoms associated with anxiety, pain, and sleeplessness.
How and When I Like to Enjoy This Strain
I personally like to enjoy the Gelato Cake strain in a pipe or bong. I like to preserve its flavor, so I don’t use any kind of papers or anything with flavor. About 0.5 grams is usually more than enough to get me stoned. Due to its relatively heavy sedating effects, I save it for the evening, when I don’t have any intense tasks left in the day.
