OG Kush has been around since the early 1990s when it was first cultivated somewhere in Florida. It’s one of my favorite indica strains, as it is both extremely potent and flavorful.
Its high potency and indica-dominant characteristics make it a perfect strain of cannabis if you need something that can potentially help relieve a bit of pain, aid with sleep issues, if you need something to make you feel hungry, and mellow you out, too.
Here’s everything you need to know about OG Kush that I’ve learned to love over the past few years.
Key Takeaways
Â
-
- OG Kush is an indica-dominant strain with THC levels up to 26%, delivering a strong, sedating body high. It’s ideal for relaxation, pain relief, and aiding sleep but also induces mild euphoria and giggly, talkative effects before sedating fully.
-
- The dominant terpenes include myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene, contributing to its earthy, citrusy, and spicy flavors while providing potential benefits like anxiety relief, stress reduction, and pain management.
-
- Best enjoyed at the end of the day, OG Kush is suited for winding down, binge-watching, or sleeping, making it unsuitable for daytime or tasks requiring focus due to its strong sedative effects.
My Experience with the OG Kush Strain
OG Kush was one of the very first cannabis strains I ever tried, about 15 years ago at this point. In fact, it was the first indica-dominant strain I ever tried, and I definitely was not ready for it. Thanks to its THC level of up to 26%, which I didn’t know about at the time, I passed out after 3-4 puffs.
Now, over a decade later, OG Kush doesn’t hit me quite as hard as it used to, and although it still sedates me and makes my body feel like I’m sinking into the couch, it doesn’t put me down for the count immediately anymore.
After a certain amount of puffs, my eyes always start feeling heavy. I personally find it a great strain to help me get to sleep at night, as I do often have trouble falling asleep.
It’s not a pure indica, so it also produces quite a cerebral high, characterized by feelings of euphoria. Although this strain makes me feel highly sedated, it also makes me feel a bit giggly and talkative, at least before it puts me down for the count.
Overall, I find that this strain produces an extremely strong body high that makes me feel like I’m buzzing, but it’s also highly sedating, so it’s not a strain that I would ever smoke if I still had something to do for the rest of the day. This is most certainly an end-of-day strain that I would only consume if I had nothing left to do, and my only other goal is to relax, eat, and binge some of my favorite shows.
What Is the OG Kush Strain?
OG Kush is an indica-dominant cannabis strain. Depending on the exact specimen, it may be anywhere between 55% and 75% indica, although, most of the effects you’ll feel will come from the indica side of things. That sedation here is very prominent!
OG Kush Strain Appearance
OG Kush definitely looks the part, as the first thing I noticed about it is the extremely thick layer of white trichomes along the outside, which is where all of that delicious THC is.Â
Besides that, the buds themselves are quite thick and shaped like average-sized grapes, so they’re quite rounded, and because this is an indica strain, the buds are also very dense and hard to the touch.Â
As for the colors, the buds tend to be mostly Forest Green, along with a select few orange hairs, and some golden accents.
OG Kush Strain Genetics
In terms of its lineage, OG Kush is a three-way cross between Hindu Kush, Lemon Thai, and Chemdawg. First, we have Hindu Kush, a moderately potent indica with an average 19% THC level, along with an earthy, sweet, and sandalwood-like flavor.
Next, we have Lemon Thai, a sativa-dominant strain with a high THC level of 22%, along with flavors of lemon and mint. Finally, we have Chemdawg, a hybrid strain with an average THC level of 18%, and flavors of diesel and sour citrus.
OG Kush Strain THC/CBD Content
The OG Kush strain can vary quite wildly in terms of its THC content, with specimens on the lower end of the spectrum coming in at around 18%. Although it has the potential to reach 26% THC, or in some cases even higher. Like I said, this is an extremely potent strain, and it’s therefore not ideal for the faint of heart.
Even for someone like me who has been a cannabis consumer for well over a decade finds it to be too strong in some cases.Â
OG Kush Strain Terpenes
The three most dominant terpenes contained in OG Kush include myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene. Caryophyllene adds earthiness, spiciness, and a bit of pepper to the mix, and it has great potential in terms of relieving both pain and anxiety.
We then have limonene, a terpene known for tasting like lemons, orange, and citrus in general, and is touted as being great at relieving anxiety. Finally, we have myrcene, a terpene known for its potential to reduce stress levels, symptoms associated with anxiety, and for promoting a restful sleep.
OG Kush Strain Effects
Due to the indica-dominant nature of OG kush, you can expect its effects to be extremely body-oriented. This is certainly the experience that I have with this strain every time I smoke it. As is the case with indica-dominant strains, they tend to hit the body more than the head. Whenever I smoke this strain, I always feel extremely sedated, heavy, relaxed, and like I am sinking into the couch.
It’s also a strain that makes me feel very sleepy, and if I smoke too much of it, it will knock me out. As mentioned above, some of the terpenes contained in this strain are useful for promoting sleep, as is the case with THC. That super high THC level is rather perfect for inducing sleep.Â
What I also appreciate about this strain, which is thanks to both the terpenes it contains and the high level of THC, is that it tends to relieve a lot of the pain I feel, especially my joint pain from years of lifting heavy weights at the gym.
The OG Kush strain does still contain a good deal of sativa genetics, and thanks to this, you can also expect a relatively pronounced cerebral high. I personally find that this strain makes me feel really giggly and talkative, and just makes my head feel like it’s up in the clouds, that is before I start mellowing out and feeling really sedated.
OG Kush Strain Reported Flavors
Thanks to the terpenes that this strain contains, you can expect quite a complex flavor profile. Right from the first hit, I tend to get a strong fuel or diesel-like taste, combined with a good deal of earthiness. Then, on the exhale, I always notice some skunkiness and a good deal of spice. It’s certainly quite the punchy strain, both in terms of its potency and its flavor.
OG Kush Strain Growing Info
As far as growing OG Kush is concerned, it’s not for the inexperienced, especially when growing in soil. It’s not an overly resilient plant, it’s prone to developing many diseases, and it doesn’t do great in varying temperature and humidity levels.
It requires stable and consistent conditions to grow well. With that being said, its indica genetics make it ideal for indoor growth, as the plant tends to remain quite short. When grown indoors, you can expect it to yield up to 475 grams per square meter, or if grown outdoors, up to 550 grams per plant.
Who I Would Recommend the OG Kush Strain For
I would recommend the OG Kush strain to anyone who wants to enjoy a very sedating and mellowing high. Thanks to its indica genetics, you can expect it to hit your body really hard, make you feel heavy and tingly, and put you to sleep, likely sooner rather than later, especially if you have a low THC tolerance.
That being said, keep in mind that this strain does have the potential to contain very high levels of THC, so beginners will want to take it easy. However, if you need something with potential to help relieve pain, relieve symptoms associated with insomnia, and put you in an overall better state of mind, then it’s certainly a strain I would recommend.
How and When I Like to Enjoy This Strain
The only way I enjoy OG Kush is at the end of the day. Once again, because of its indica nature and its heavily sedating effects, it’s not something that I smoke at the beginning of the day, or if I have anything that needs doing.
This is a strain that I reserve strictly for the end of the day, when I have nothing left to do except for eating and watching my favorite TV show. Due to its high potency, it also doesn’t take much of it, so I usually just put one or two small buds into my bong and take a couple of rips.
